Grace Caton’s Costume Jewelry Art Tree
Memories of Grace Houser Caton
Grace Eleanor Houser Caton was such an important lady to the lives of our family and the lives of Anthony, Harper County, Kansas.
I have spent many days visiting Eldon Younce at The Anthony City Library. Mr. Younce had such fond memories of Grace. He took me to a drawer and pulled out a photocopy of Grace in an news article. I decided that soon a real photograph of Grace would be made available to the library.
As I am now compiling and writing My Harper County Family, there will be many photographs of Grace for Mr. Younce to enjoy.
Meribeth and I visited Grace’s Granddaughter Deena Caton Gibson, and her daughter Daneen Gibson when I visited Meribeth and Billy at their new home in Gilbert, Arizona last week.
On the wall of Deena’s home was this lovely picture of a Christmas tree that Grace had created with her costume jewelry. It was very familiar to me, so I took a quick photo. Deena said she had just renewed the felt and the picture a couple of years ago.
So many wonderful memories of Aunt Grace and Berniece Hazel joining us for Sunday dinners, and especially Thanksgiving Dinners. Some of you may remember she took us to the Catholic Church in Danville for Thanksgiving Dinner, which was a wonderful experience.
Another memory was Aunt Grace gathered up Deena, Mike, and several of us cousins and she took us to the City swimming pool. Sometimes she hosted family in her little basement for sleepovers. Most of all, I remember Berniece and her playing the piano for us.
What a grand lady Grace Houser Caton was. May she always be remembered!
