William “Billy” Law, Grocer
William “Billy Law was born March 2, 1872, in Owaneco, Christian County, Illinois to George Edward Law and Margaret Jarvis Law. In about 1878, George and Margaret along with their children joined his older brother Ada and Ada’s family to migrate to Harper County, Kansas. In 1915, Billy Law, first cousin of Sarah Law Houser and Leroy Law, started a new business called The William Law Cash Grocery. Billy sold fresh groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables. He had a telephone, number “95”. Every week there was an ad in the Anthony Bulletin advertising Billy’s store.

1212 Bitting Street, Wichita Kansas
By 1917, Billy had done so well in the grocery business in Anthony, Kansas, he decided to move to Wichita. He purchased a bungalow home at 1212 Bitting Avenue, Wichita, Kansas. He spent the rest of his career distributing groceries.
With the grocery business being such a part of our Houser heritage, this little story of William “Billy” Law seems to show us the beginnings of that heritage.

I have wondered which Billy Law, Granddad Houser talked about. At first, I assumed it was Sarah’s brother William N. Law, but he died in 1903, so I decided it probably wasn’t him.
Then, there was William Martin Law, son of Leroy Law, born in 1886, two years older than Irvin. Finally, William “Billy” Law, much older, but the local grocer. What’s your guess?
